I became a freelance photographer in 1959 and have been a working photographer ever since. These pictures are a compilation of portraits I took during the earlier part of my career through to 2007. They are celebrated in a book called Public Faces Private Places, recently published by Francis Lincoln.
I grew up in a circle of artists, writers, actors and designers, and in my early years I was lucky enough to be commissioned to photograph a lot of them for Queen, Tatler, Nova and Vogue. I also worked on some iconic films; Tom Jones, A Taste of Honey, Billy Liar and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.
I gradually moved on to Fashion and Advertising & Children. Now I mainly work on commissioned books - an interesting development for me! I still love making photographs and enjoy the thrill and excitement of making a picture work whatever the medium.
Throughout this time, as long as I have been using Nikons, I have known Mike, from Nikon to KJP and thence to Fixation. Mike, Paula and their colleagues have been instrumental in looking after my equipment and me ever since and nursed me through the transition to Digital. In other words they spoil me rotten, fixing my equipment at a drop of a hat, sometimes helping me to sort it for myself on the end of a phone if I can't get it to them. I feel very lucky to have their never-ending support. They are the tops!
