Is your camera running the latest firmware?

Check you’re up to date with our handy guide.

Most cameras see their firmware updated a handful of times throughout the course of their lifetime, but unless you’ve bought a model very recently it’s possible that your camera is still running an older version.

We’ve rounded up the latest firmware versions for current and recently discontinued cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony & Fujifilm so you can check yours is running the right one.

Just find the firmware option in your camera’s menu system and check that number against the one below for your camera.

D5

Release date: May 2018

  • Added Recall shooting functions to the functions that can be assigned to camera controls. Holding the selected control recalls previously-saved exposure settings (including shutter speed and aperture), a feature that can for example be used to switch rapidly between scenes that require different exposures.
    • Recall shooting functions can be assigned to the following controls using Custom Setting f1 (Custom control assignment): Preview button, Fn1 button, Fn2 button, AF-ON button, Sub-selector center, AF-ON button for vertical shooting, and Lens focus function buttons. It can also be assigned to the Fn button on a WR-1 or WR-T10 remote control using the Assign remote (WR) Fn button option in the SETUP MENU.
    • For more information, see the addenda to the User’s Manual available from the Nikon Download Center (Nikon Download Center > D5 > Manuals > Supplementary Firmware Update Manual).
  • Fixed the following issues:
    • If Backup or RAW Slot 1 – JPEG Slot 2 was selected for PHOTO SHOOTING MENU > Role played by card in Slot 2 in http server mode, the shutter would sometimes not be released during burst shooting.
    • Reactivating the standby timer would sometimes fail to re-establish the link between the camera and some makes of mobile router connected via Ethernet cable (Prioritize power saving selected for SETUP MENU > Network > Options > Power saving).
  • The focal lengths displayed when teleconverters for AF-S or AF-I lenses are attached have been updated as follows:
Lens focal length Teleconverter Before update After update
    400 mm 1.4× 550 mm 560 mm
    400 mm 1.7× 650 mm 680 mm
    800 mm 1.4× 1150 mm 1120 mm
    800 mm 1.7× 1350 mm 1360 mm
    • The focal length displays for some combinations of lenses and teleconverters may differ from those given above.
  • The SETUP MENU > Time zone and date > Time zone display now shows only the names of major cities in the currently selected zone.

  • Added the following supports for AF-P lenses:
    – If the standby timer expires after focusing, the focus position will no longer change when the timer is reactivated.
    – When focus is adjusted by rotating the lens focus ring, the focus indicator in the viewfinder (and in live view, the focus point in the monitor) now flash to indicate when infinity or the minimum focus distance is reached.
    • Added support for AF-P DX lenses.

 D4

Current version: 1.11
Release date: February 2018

  • • Added an Assign remote Fn button option at Position f17 in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU.
    • Added support for CompactFlash memory cards with capacities over 128 GB.
    • If the AF-ON button is used to focus during viewfinder photography when AF-ON only is selected for Custom Setting a4 (AF activation) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU, focus will remain locked when the button is released. Previously the shutter could then be released at any time, but under the following conditions this behavior has been changed so that the shutter will not be released if the camera is unable to focus:
    – AF-S is selected for AF mode
    – Single-point AF is selected for AF-area mode
    – Focus is selected for Custom Setting a2 (AF-S priority selection) in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU. A supplementary manual describing this feature is available.
    • Fixed an issue that resulted in the top control panel displaying “Err” when both XQD and CompactFlash cards were inserted in the camera.
    Notice
    • Before proceeding with the update, users of Lexar 400× and 1000× CompactFlash® memory cards will need to follow the steps here to check compatibility.
    • Do not attempt to load settings saved using Save/load settings for firmware “A” version 1.05/“B” version 1.03 or earlier onto a D4 with “A”/“B” firmware version 1.10. Settings saved with firmware “A” version 1.05/“B” version 1.03 or earlier are not compatible with D4 “A”/“B” firmware version 1.10.
    • Before using a card reader or the like to copy pictures to a computer from a memory card with a capacity exceeding 128 GB, confirm that both the computer operating system and card reader support capacities over 128 GB, as otherwise you may encounter such problems as being unable to transfer images. Note that because memory cards with capacities over 128 GB are supported from camera “A”/“B” firmware version 1.10, files can now be copied via USB.
