The Canon EOS RP is essentially a smaller, lighter and cheaper alternative to the imaging giant’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS RX-T2_BK_18-55mm_FrontLeft_White

Designed for Fujifilm’s mirrorless cameras, the lens features a focal length equivalent to 24mm (in the 35mm format), has a maximum aperture of f2.8 and adopts an inner focusing system driven by a stepping motor for faster and quieter auto-focusing.

Main feature
  • The lens features 10 lens elements in 8 groups including two aspherical elements. Optimal arrangement of aspherical lenses suppress spherical aberrations and field curvature while maintaining high performance from the center of the screen to every corner.

Wildlife pro Chris Schmid tells us why his Alpha mirrorless cameras have changed the way he shoots the natural world.

The advantage of EVF

“One of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder,” says Chris, “is that the exposure you see in the EVF is what you’re going to get in the picture.” Chris always shoots in manual exposure mode, so the EVF has an added benefit – in tricky lighting, it means not only does he have total control, but also there is no need to shoot additional frames because of guesswork.

With old-fashioned optical viewfinders on DSLRs, there’s often guesswork involved which can put some photographers off working in manual mode, but with an EVF nothing is left to chance. “So when I’m shooting a subject that’s backlit, or in shadow,” says Chris, “I don’t need to shoot extra frames to get it right – I can concentrate on capturing the moment.”

Silent Shooting

“Sony’s Silent Shooting mode is perfect for me,” Chris tells us, “because even a small shutter noise can cause an animal to react”. Total silence means a more truthful image – it’s more natural and that’s when you know that you’re capturing the animal’s real behaviour.

“Last year I was photographing gorillas, and with the silent shutter it was an amazing experience. I could enjoy that moment without any noise from the camera, just hearing the birds, the wind, and with no intrusion on feeling. It was just perfect – a pure joy really.”

Image quality

“To shoot the way I do, you need a big dynamic range,” Chris explains “because I often like to capture the animal’s environment, rather than a straight portrait. When I compare the shots from my α9 and α7R III to cameras from even five years ago, it’s amazing. All the details in the highlights of skies or the shadows of the bush are much easier to retain.”

Something else Chris relies on from his Alphas is great noise performance at higher ISOs. He explains that, “because I’m shooting early or late in the day I often need to push the ISO, maybe to 1600 or more. It’s vital for hunting and other behavioural shots that take place at those times of day.”

Fast, reliable focus

Moving subjects or those hidden by the environment need fast and accurate Auto Focus to find and follow them, because, as Chris says, “the magic is only there for a couple of seconds and you need to react quickly to catch it.”

Most of the time, he relies on the proven Continuous AF of his α9 and α7R III, using the tracking mode to follow an animal, and only switching occasionally to Single AF when an animal is static and he can place the focus point on the eye.

Even the Focus Peaking mode comes into play on some occasions: “If I’m shooting, say, a lion in the bush, the leaves and grass in front can confuse the focus, so if that’s the case I just switch to focus peaking in manual and can see clearly what’s sharp in the EVF. There’s something for every situation.”

The Fujifilm X-T3 features a new X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4 image processing engine for the delivery of outstanding stills and video. Is this the moment to switch to mirrorless?

Fujifilm has officially announced the new X-T3. The APS-C mirrorless camera boasts superb image quality and an enhanced ability to track a moving subject – AF performance has been significantly improved and the electronic shutter is capable of up to 30fps blackout-free burst shooting. The X-T3 is also the world’s first APS-C mirrorless camera that can record internal 10-bit 4K video at 60fps.

Main features

– The combined might of the X-T3’s X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4 is set to deliver superb image quality and the fastest processing in X-Series history.

– The X-T3’s X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor boasts four times the number of phase detection pixels than the camera’s predecessor (the X-T2). This has increased the phase detection AF area to cover approximately 100% of the frame.

– The X-T3’s electronic shutter is capable of blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30fps. The mechanical shutter is capable of continuous shooting at 11fps (without the vertical grip).

– Improvements have been made to the mirrorless camera’s low-light performance. The X-T3’s native ISO range is 160-12,800 and its low-light AF limit is -3EV.

– Enhanced viewfinder performance should improve the user’s ability to track a moving subject. The new Sports Finder mode is targeted towards action photographers by capturing a 1.25x crop, marked on the rear LCD or EVF. The larger field of view is intended to aid the manual tracking of a subject, while also decreasing the blackout time.

– The X-T3 can capture 4K at 60fps in 10-bit 4:2:0 internal SD card recording and 4K at 60fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI output (both can be filmed at the same time). Supported video formats include the widely-used MPEG-4 AVC and HEVC for greater data compression.

Vertical Power Booster Battery Grip VPB-XT3 (designed specifically for the X-T3)

This Vertical Battery Grip is dust and water resistant, and is capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C. It houses two batteries, bringing the total number of batteries to three (including the one in the camera body). This increases the maximum number of frames that can be taken per charge to approximately 1,100 (in Normal mode). The camera does not need to suspend its operation to switch to a new battery, even during continuous shooting or video recording.

– The grip features a variety of buttons to provide the same level of operability when shooting vertically, as you’d expect when shooting horizontally.

– Charge batteries within the VPB-XT3 by using the supplied AC adapter (AC-9VS). You can fully charge two batteries at the same time in approximately two hours.

Sony releases the A7R III

The new Sony A7R III, announced recently, takes the high-resolution 42.4MP Exmor R CMOS image sensor and gives it a speed boost. A new front-end LSI effectively doubles the readout speed of the image sensor, while an updated Bionz X processing engine promises speeds 1.8 times as fast as the A7R II.

Given that it’s also capable of shooting at 10fps with AF tracking, carries an ISO range of 100-32,000 (expandable to 50-102,400) and offers a 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivity settings, the A7R III should be useful in all situations and in all shooting conditions. If you’re in live view mode, the camera can still manage an impressive 8fps.

The focusing system has been overhauled from the A7R II, with 399 focal-plane phase-detection AF points covering approximately 68% of the image area, complemented by 400 contrast AF points. This advanced system is expected to deliver AF acquisition that’s twice as fast as it was on the A7R II in low-light conditions, and with tracking that’s twice as accurate.

Video hasn’t been neglected – the A7R III shoots 4K (3840×2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the image sensor, and uses full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm format to produce oversampled 4K footage. There’s a new Hybrid Log-Gamma supporting instant HDR footage, and S-Log2 and S-Log3 have been added. The camera also records super-slow-motion at 120fps.
