There can be few London-based press photographers who haven’t used a camera that was bought from Donal – he’s been selling to them for around 30 years! His selling career started at City Camera exchange in 1988, later progressing to Jessops followed by Jacobs Photovisual as Pro Sales Manager in 1999. He remained there until 2012, when he joined Fixation.
Mike has worked on Fixation’s sales desk for thirteen years, but his career in photography started decades earlier and he claims to have spent most of his life with a camera in hand. He’s certainly familiar with both sides of the business, starting as a studio photographer in the early seventies, before going on to work for Wallace Heaton, Fox Talbot and Leeds Photovisual in the early eighties.
If Ian Fleming the novelist had characterised this namesake in one of his books, you might expect the result to be more Caractacus Potts than 007. With his unconventional take on life, Ian certainly gives his colleagues the giggles, but brings invaluable experience in the industry, including 12 years working at Jacobs Photovisual, so perhaps not completely Potts after all.
